Retreat Theme:

In Advent we focus on God’s great Love. In her book, Wild Dancing: Embraced by Untamed Love, Janice Edwards, RSM, tells us that “Love is the sole invincible and all-embracing force of the universe.” After brain surgery, when doctors wakened her from three days of anesthesia, she experienced everything and everyone as immersed in an abiding Love that “explodes conceptual categories, fulfills passionate desires, and surpasses our wildest dreams.” God is everlasting Love, but it is difficult for us to experience our unceasing immersion in this God. Our awareness has not evolved sufficient depth, and daily realities can distract us from the deeper dimension of all things.

During this season, a practice of contemplating Love strengthens our awareness of this abiding immersion. Let us briefly contemplate a harried businessman as he leaves his office on a beautiful day to eat lunch in a nearby park. Cool breezes and a warm sun relax him, and suddenly he senses someone say lovingly, “Come rest in me a little more often.” Or consider a mother who worries about her son’s alcohol abuse, and one evening feels a gentle, inner attraction drawing her to her first Al Anon meeting. When we contemplate (notice, engage, savor, embrace, endure, and even wrestle with) experiences like these, we develop a practice of contemplating Love. Then as God’s unlimited Love rubs against our limited love, we become a little more like Love itself.

Many of us give and receive Love throughout each day, but we do not experience these happenings as God moving within and among us. During this Advent retreat Janice will invite us to treasure our innate, everyday experiences of God Love and to embrace the vulnerability that enhances this practice. Her book will be available for purchase and signing at the end of the day.

Schedule:

This day of prayer is an invitation to become more aware of God’s movement in all of the small moments of our day. We hope to provide a spacious place and schedule for you to enter into rest, prayer, and reflection. The day will begin at 9:00 am and provide times for silent personal reflection, engagement with a series of prayer stations, and opportunity to walk an indoor prayer labyrinth. The community as a whole will be invited to gather once in the morning and once in the afternoon for input from Janice Edwards, RSM, as she invites us to treasure our innate, everyday experiences of God’s love and to embrace the vulnerability that enhances this practice.
