This experiential workshop is designed for spiritual directors who desire to learn the process of group spiritual direction.  It will provide an opportunity to cultivate the practice of your “mind descending into your heart.” Participants will immerse themselves in the contemplative grounding of deep listening, prayerful silence and being fully present, which is central to this work. Through experiential learning and participation in spiritual community you will be able to discern your own call to this ministry and receive guidance on how to form and facilitate a group for spiritual direction.

Workshop presentations include the themes of: the sacred art of listening, discernment and intercessory prayer. This sharing/listening model, coupled with generous time for silence, invites the participants to an open, spacious heart; deepening trust, and transformative healing.  During the weekend there will be a group each day and an extended period of silence on Saturday evening.

What is Group Spiritual Direction?

“In Group Spiritual Direction people learn to listen to God’s Spirit at work in them for others in the group. As they take the sharing of other into the resting place of shared silence they seek to respond to what has been disclosed out of that prayerful place. Thus there is a collective wisdom available for each person. Whereas in one-to-one direction there is a single other person to lend vision to the directee, a group affords the possibility of many faces of truth being uncovered in any given situation. Persons are challenged to take the words of others into the place of Mystery where they can claim what is real for them.” Rose Mary Dougherty from her book Group Spiritual Direction: Community for Discernment p.36

“Unless we are grounded in Mystery—unless we experience both ourselves and others as co-participants in Mystery—we find it almost impossible to live in compassionate love of one another for any length of time. Unless we have ‘new eyes’ that can see the others contemplatively, it is easy to miss the many-splendored thing that is our life together.” Carolyn Gratton from her book The Art of Spiritual Guidance  p. 143

“When you speak to me about your deepest questions, you do not want to be fixed or saved: you want to be seen and heard, to have your truth acknowledged and honored. If your problem is soul-deep, your soul alone knows what you need to do about it, and my presumptuous advice will only drive your soul back into the woods. So the best service I can render when you speak to me about such a struggle is to hold you faithfully in a space where you can listen to your inner teacher.” Parker Palmer in his book “A Hidden Wholeness”  p. 117
