What to Expect . . .

For each retreat we will come together to listen for God through the practice of lectio divina.  There will be a common thread linking 3 or 4 scripture passages together.  You will be encouraged to slow your pace for the retreat.  There will be structured time that we will share as a group and there will also be unstructured time (some designated for silence).  Resources for how you might enhance this experience will be provided for those who are interested.  This retreat is designed to create space for rest and renewal for the whole person.  You are welcome to simply “be with God”.

Time and Space for . . .

  • slowing down and stepping aside from everyday life for the purpose of being with God
  • inviting participants into the practice of Lectio Divina (a way of listening for God through multiple readings of Scripture with intentional space for silence)
  • practicing individual silence and attending to God
  • experiencing and sharing with others in safety, surrounded by a beautiful environment at the Jesuit Center, Wernersville, PA and in the midst of caring people who are rooted in the contemplative life

Each Lectio Divina retreat will include some suggested resources for use during the weekend.  Here are some resources you might want to read, but there is NO required reading:

  • Hearing God, Dallas Willard, 2012
  • Sacred Rhythms: Arranging Our Lives for Spiritual Transformation, Ruth Haley Barton, 2006
  • Invitation to Solitude and Silence:  Experiencing God’s Transforming Presence, Ruth Haley Barton, 2010
  • Eat this Book, Eugene Peterson, 2006

Individual Commitments during Lectio Divina Retreats

  1. Respect the silence for yourself and the silence of others on retreat
  2. Be open to sharing some of your spiritual journey with others in a small group setting
  3. Be drawn to praying the scriptures, solitude, silence and meditation
  4. Be prayerful for retreat leaders, other participants, the Jesuit Center staff and residents.

About the Facilitator

Christine Labrum

Artist and Spiritual Director, Christine Labrum (MDiv), is passionate about creating space to listen for God and companioning others as they more deeply experience the heart of God. The practice of Lectio Divina was one of Christine’s first conscious experiences of the gifts of contemplative faith. In exploring this practice personally and in community she found it a path towards listening deeply for God. In a time when our lives are often filled beyond capacity with activity and service and our world is filled with chaos and noise it is a delight to offer space where we can “Be still, and know…” that God is, and that God loves us (Psalm 46:10). As an artist Christine creates images in response to and reflection upon our spiritual journey with God. Many of her images have come out of this practice.  For more of her work, see http://www.creatingspacetolisten.com
